Bishop Feehan High School review by .

From my experience at the school I would rate the academic program of the school very highly. I had previously attended all public schools before Feehan and would say that Feehan's academics were far beyond any I had received before. The teaching is primarily lecture based, but most teacher's are very comfortable speaking and the format is efficient. I would definitely say that Feehan prepared me for college much more than most of my other friends that had attended the local public schools. There seemed to me to be less of a stress on preforming well on standardized tests and more of an emphasis on actually learning content. This may be solely due to lack of funding depending on test outcomes but was still true. I would say in my personal experience the English department was especially helpful in preparing for me for my college writing classes. The workload has fairly heavy most weeks but I think that it helped to prepare for college classes, and wasn't unbearable. I always felt comfortable asking for extra help if I needed it and was always offered it when the teacher felt I may have need it. Teachers were always available and class sizes were large enough for good discussions but small enough to know everyone personally.

Sample insights on college counseling

  • They have contacts at most of the major universities and feel perfectly comfortable picking up the phone and advocating for a student to get accepted somewhere they feel is a good fit for that student. However, these counselors are certainly not magic bullets. They cannot guarantee that a student will get into an Ivy League university...
  • For those wishing to move on to Oxford or Cambridge, the provision is second-to-none. In the months running up to application and interview, every subject faculty offers classes (often run by former Oxbridge tutors) exploring further areas of their subject as well as offering advice on personal statements, interview technique and more...

Admissions - Getting Accepted

I applied when I was 14 and don't remember a whole lot about the process....

Sample insights on admissions

  • For the interview, dress conservatively. Try to be very clean and put together. Also, I was a tour guide for two years and at the end of every tour, we were asked to evaluate the candidate so if you think the tour is not apart of the process, you are very wrong. Ask questions and be interested. Also, tip for the parents: the kids speak on the tour. Do not ask their questions for them...
  • Most younger siblings have an easy time in the admissions process. I can only think of one case of a younger sibling not being admitted. About half of the students who entered with me had come from public schools. The remainder came from private K-6 schools, or had transferred from other New York private schools The Elizabeth Morrow School and St. Bernard were two of the larger feeder schools...

School Life

The campus life at Feehan is great, with students, faculty and alumni on campus all the time. There is a very open, welcoming environment and everyone is treated with manners. The school's religion plays the major role in the political views of both the school and some it's students. I would say majority liberal with a fair amount of conservatives. There was also exceptionally little bullying during my time there. Although controlling cyber-bullying is out of the schools control, there was little to none present on campus. ...
