The quality of teachers is what makes the academics at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School (Fieldston) so strong. Every teacher is not only qualified but very passionate about the subjects that they teach. I honestly never experienced having a bad teacher at Fieldston, only incredible teachers and really incredible teachers--in all departments (including sciences, humanities, gym, arts, ethics, etc). Fieldston transformed me from a kid who hated school, into a great writer, thinker, musician, economist, and moral human being. Being an excellent writer has helped me receive As in every English class I have taken throughout my college career, and has helped me write essays on business school case studies as well. Fieldston prepares its students extremely well for college, as Fieldston graduates are passionate about learning, have learned to critically reason in order to make great decisions, and are already used to university level academic rigors.they want to write about in their term papers in the humanities and social sciences, and motivated to individualize their academic experiences. Because teachers are given autonomy to design their curriculum, and students are motivated to learn for the sake of learning because they are able to choose classes that interest them, genuine learning occurs at Fieldston--as opposed to the superficial "studying, testing, regurgitation of information, and forgetting everything learned in class" process that occurs in most universities in America. The small class sizes and passionate teachers who are always available to meet with students create a comfortable discussion-based learning environment rather than a formal lecture environment that serves to distance the teachers from the students. Although there is a very heavy weekly workload consisting of 25 hours of difficult work each week, teachers and other helpful resources are available for academically challenged as well as advanced students. Fieldston's philosophy is to teach equality and ethics in order to create ethical individuals who go out and make the world a much better place.

For the interview, dress conservatively. Try to be very clean and put together. Also, I was a tour guide for two years and at the end of every tour, we were asked to evaluate the candidate so if you think the tour is not apart of the process, you are very wrong. Ask questions and be interested. Also, tip for the parents: the kids speak on the tour. Do not ask their questions for them...

While Fieldston is a very liberal school (at least socially), there are always two sides presented at any given debate. Outside of this generally pervasive liberal culture, Fieldston is a very diverse place (ethnically and socio-economically). By learning in this diverse environment, students learn about other cultures and philosophies. The Fieldston community is very strong because peers help each other rather than compete against each other. The surrounding neighborhood of Riverdale is extremely beautiful and safe--the absolute nicest part of the Bronx, and perhaps all of New York City. ...
