Magdalen College School review by University of Cambridge student.
Magdalen College could not have prepared me better for life at university. Strong both in sciences and arts, I thoroughly enjoyed my classes. Work is done in a fun manner, far more is achieved than it feels like work is being put in. With class sizes in 6th form of a maximum of 16, but normally far nearer 8-10, teaching is based around discussions, which has prepared me a lot to have confidence, both at interview and in supervisions. Although the weekly workload is fairly high, we were recommended 20 hours of study outside of class, teachers are understanding of issues and will work around that. Perhaps most beneficial is the Wayneflete Studies programme in which everybody submits an extended research essay.

For those wishing to move on to Oxford or Cambridge, the provision is second-to-none. For the interview, dress conservatively. Try to be very clean and put together. Also, I was a tour guide for two years and at the end of every tour, we were asked to evaluate the candidate so if you think the tour is not apart of the process, you are very wrong. Ask questions and be interested. Also, tip for the parents: the kids speak on the tour. Do not ask their questions for them...
Most younger siblings have an easy time in the admissions process. I can only think of one case of a younger sibling not being admitted. About half of the students who entered with me had come from public schools. The remainder came from private K-6 schools, or had transferred from other New York private schools The Elizabeth Morrow School and St. Bernard were two of the larger feeder schools...
There is a vast range of pupils, from those whose parents are academics in Oxford to those who are on academic bursaries. Discipline is liberal and self-expression is encouraged. The pastoral system is very nurturing, with a system of house tutors, and house groups with pupils from different years. This is based around local areas where you live, so you are encouraged to make friends of different ages in your locality....
