Roxbury Latin School review by Macalester College student.
The Roxbury Latin School is, across the board, a phenomenal academic institution. All departments are strong and continually improving thanks to an extremely dedicated faculty that cares deeply about each student and the mission of the school. The most beneficial skills I gained at RL in terms of usefulness in college are time management and writing. The way that teachers in the humanities challenged me to be concise with my articulation of complex thoughts was invaluable throughout my transition to college. In the classroom, RL students are very supportive of each other, and despite the natural "whatdjaget?" there is never animosity or a sense of competition against each other.

Also, I was a tour guide for two years and at the end of every tour, we were asked to evaluate the candidate so if you think the tour is not apart of the process, you are very wrong. Ask questions and be interested. Also, tip for the parents: the kids speak on the tour. Do not ask their questions for them...
Most younger siblings have an easy time in the admissions process. I can only think of one case of a younger sibling not being admitted. About half of the students who entered with me had come from public schools. The remainder came from private K-6 schools, or had transferred from other New York private schools The Elizabeth Morrow School and St. Bernard were two of the larger feeder schools...
My time at Roxbury Latin was a love/hate relationship, but as I left RL and transitioned to college, I realized how much I really did love RL. The administration can at times be very overbearing with the activities they pressure you into, or the way they expect you to behave. However, because it happens to every boy, the shared experience of the "RL struggle" brings students closer than any other school can. The student body at RL is very diverse, but also shares all the same core values, which explains why students from very different backgrounds often become great friends.....
