Tower Hill School review by .

Tower Hill has an extremely comprehensive arts program. Students were required in middle school to participate in band or chorus and encouraged to continue to do so in High School. The drama department was open to all students, even if it was minimal participation. The small size of Tower Hill allowed students to participate in multiple activities and not be pigeon-holed into certain groups. More recently, Tower hill has placed a great emphasis on developing their athletic facilities and programs which has helped to balance out the art department. Teachers at Tower Hill encouraged open forum style classes, where students were welcome to voice their opinions and learn to back them up with facts within smaller group exercises. Since class sizes were small, it was easy for students to feel comfortable speaking in class, which helps develop academic confidence. Many faculty members at Tower Hill served multiple purposes on campus, some teachers were also athletic coaches or advisors, so students had the opportunity to meet with teachers outside the classroom and gained a comfort level with faculty members that allowed for more interaction on a more personal level.

College Counseling

Tower Hill does a wonderful job of preparing students for college and preparing kids for....

Sample insights on college counseling

  • They have contacts at most of the major universities and feel perfectly comfortable picking up the phone and advocating for a student to get accepted somewhere they feel is a good fit for that student. However, these counselors are certainly not magic bullets. They cannot guarantee that a student will get into an Ivy League university...
  • For those wishing to move on to Oxford or Cambridge, the provision is second-to-none. In the months running up to application and interview, every subject faculty offers classes (often run by former Oxbridge tutors) exploring further areas of their subject as well as offering advice on personal statements, interview technique and more...

Admissions - Getting Accepted

I entered Tower Hill in middle school, which is when I would recommend entering the....

Sample insights on admissions

  • For the interview, dress conservatively. Try to be very clean and put together. Also, I was a tour guide for two years and at the end of every tour, we were asked to evaluate the candidate so if you think the tour is not apart of the process, you are very wrong. Ask questions and be interested. Also, tip for the parents: the kids speak on the tour. Do not ask their questions for them...
  • Most younger siblings have an easy time in the admissions process. I can only think of one case of a younger sibling not being admitted. About half of the students who entered with me had come from public schools. The remainder came from private K-6 schools, or had transferred from other New York private schools The Elizabeth Morrow School and St. Bernard were two of the larger feeder schools...

School Life

The environment at Tower Hill was the main reason I chose to attend. The atmosphere was relaxed and fostered a comfort level at school. There was a wonderful support system of faculty who really got to know their students and care about their well being. The importance of tradition was emphasized greatly, whether it be the school wide "Tree Trim" in December or Homecoming where alumni from years past come back to root for the Hillers....
