Waldorf School of Garden City review by .

The Waldorf School of Garden City has a unique, yet extremely successful academic program and curriculum. The school strongly supports both the humanities and STEM, and most importantly, does not prioritize one over the other. The school offers a great math program, with an advanced track that students can be placed on in 7th grade and continue until the end of their high school career. There are also a variety of science courses taken within the four years, including an Honors Chemistry class and college level courses through Adelphi University. With the humanities, the school offers Accelerated courses as well, and gives students a very well-rounded experience. From learning about the history of art, to learning about philosophy, to organic chemistry and mechanics, almost every subject is taught in the seminar style class called "Main Lesson", which is the first class of everyday. The class takes an in depth look at each topic, which changes month to month in periods called "blocks". From this class, besides learning about a specific subject, students experience a seminar style class like that of a college course. Besides academics, the general atmosphere of the student body is one that constantly looks to the future. Most significantly, the students have a voice and work with parents and faculty constantly to improve and evolve with the times. Most of this is realized through Student Government holding weekly meetings that cover topics ranging from the dress code to social issues, or working alongside charities to fundraise for a great cause. Another important aspect of the school environment is the faculty. At the Waldorf School of Garden City, teachers have a passion for teaching and make sure no student falls behind. Teachers are accessible, and take every matter into consideration. In the end, this prepares students for college because it makes them unafraid to attend office hours and speak face-to-face with professors. At the end of my first year of college, I can confidently say that Waldorf prepared me very well for the rigors of university. I remember after my first week of classes, I was relieved to see how much of a handle a had on things because Waldorf taught me time management and challenged me with difficult assignments and classes. College is just a step up, a higher caliber of difficulty, but after attending Waldorf, it felt like there was nothing I could not complete.

College Counseling

The Waldorf School of Garden City guidance counselor works diligently with every single student to....

Sample insights on college counseling

  • They have contacts at most of the major universities and feel perfectly comfortable picking up the phone and advocating for a student to get accepted somewhere they feel is a good fit for that student. However, these counselors are certainly not magic bullets. They cannot guarantee that a student will get into an Ivy League university...
  • For those wishing to move on to Oxford or Cambridge, the provision is second-to-none. In the months running up to application and interview, every subject faculty offers classes (often run by former Oxbridge tutors) exploring further areas of their subject as well as offering advice on personal statements, interview technique and more...

Admissions - Getting Accepted

Because I started at the Waldorf school in nursery, I am not sure what the....

Sample insights on admissions

  • For the interview, dress conservatively. Try to be very clean and put together. Also, I was a tour guide for two years and at the end of every tour, we were asked to evaluate the candidate so if you think the tour is not apart of the process, you are very wrong. Ask questions and be interested. Also, tip for the parents: the kids speak on the tour. Do not ask their questions for them...
  • Most younger siblings have an easy time in the admissions process. I can only think of one case of a younger sibling not being admitted. About half of the students who entered with me had come from public schools. The remainder came from private K-6 schools, or had transferred from other New York private schools The Elizabeth Morrow School and St. Bernard were two of the larger feeder schools...

School Life

The Waldorf School of Garden City campus is colorful, vibrant, and full of life. The student body is extremely diverse and inclusive, each class becomes a family. The surrounding neighborhood is the beautiful community of Garden City, and right next door is Adelphi University, where Waldorf students can make their first college visit an impromptu walk across the street. Walking down the hallways of Waldorf is a wonderful experience; students artwork and achievements are showcased and appreciation for the changing seasons and holidays is seen through the many colors and decorations. The cafeteria prepares full meals everyday that are all-natural and....
