Winsor School review by .

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Winsor! The teachers and staff do a great job making the girls feel comfortable and welcomed at the school. Teachers not only support students academically but make the effort to offer emotional and social support. Winsor has a great learning environment. Students are encouraged to push themselves and excel. The academic prowess that is so prominent at the school can sometimes be intense and intimidating but the teachers are always readily available to help. The lively close-knit familial environment is definitely a strength of the school! Winsor definitely helped prepare for college. I found that I was able to do well in certain classes because of all the writing intensive courses I was required to take at Winsor. Things like essays and presentations were completed with ease. The small class sizes are probably one of the reasons for Winsor's success as a school. Students are able to get the attention and support they need from teachers. Anytime I needed extra help in a class, time was always made for me. I was given as much time and help as I needed. The classes are typically interactive and discussion based causing Winsor girls to develop confidence when voicing an opinion or presenting. At Winsor, the girls are pushed to think analytically. Thinking analytically is probably the most important skill that I have acquired at Winsor.

College Counseling

The college counseling program at Winsor is very efficient and supportive. At Winsor, students are....

Sample insights on college counseling

  • They have contacts at most of the major universities and feel perfectly comfortable picking up the phone and advocating for a student to get accepted somewhere they feel is a good fit for that student. However, these counselors are certainly not magic bullets. They cannot guarantee that a student will get into an Ivy League university...
  • For those wishing to move on to Oxford or Cambridge, the provision is second-to-none. In the months running up to application and interview, every subject faculty offers classes (often run by former Oxbridge tutors) exploring further areas of their subject as well as offering advice on personal statements, interview technique and more...

Admissions - Getting Accepted

I applied to Winsor for entrance into the 6th grade. I had to take the....

Sample insights on admissions

  • For the interview, dress conservatively. Try to be very clean and put together. Also, I was a tour guide for two years and at the end of every tour, we were asked to evaluate the candidate so if you think the tour is not apart of the process, you are very wrong. Ask questions and be interested. Also, tip for the parents: the kids speak on the tour. Do not ask their questions for them...
  • Most younger siblings have an easy time in the admissions process. I can only think of one case of a younger sibling not being admitted. About half of the students who entered with me had come from public schools. The remainder came from private K-6 schools, or had transferred from other New York private schools The Elizabeth Morrow School and St. Bernard were two of the larger feeder schools...

School Life

Winsor is generally liberal. Theres a huge effort at the school to discuss and promote social justice. The school is predominantly white but in recent years, the school has done a really good job at bringing in more students of color. (I happen to be one of them) There is also a great support system for students of color that isn't as available at other private schools. ...
