Deerfield Academy review by Duke University student.
The strength of the academic program at Deerfield Academy lies within the students themselves. Class discussions, interactive studies, experiments, etc. are commonplace in a Deerfield classroom. Everybody in the class will be as smart as or smarter than you are. This leads to meaningful and in-depth discussions and analyses of the subject matter. If you are not a super-competitive type student, Deerfield might not be the right place for you. Class Size: Every class will be small enough that everybody is given enough attention. This small class size also means that teachers will be able to notice that you are slacking off. Faculty: Extremely intense. A lot of phds teach classes and they will grill you until you understand everything. They are always there for you. They all live on campus and you can visit them anytime. Most teachers are very caring and nice. Work Load: A lot of work but manageable given that you have a high enough IQ. I had more work to do at Deerfield than at Duke. Certainly not an exam-only type school. If the only thing you are good at is test-taking, you will not excel at this school.

For the interview, dress conservatively. Try to be very clean and put together. Also, I was a tour guide for two years and at the end of every tour, we were asked to evaluate the candidate so if you think the tour is not apart of the process, you are very wrong. Ask questions and be interested. Also, tip for the parents: the kids speak on the tour. Do not ask their questions for them...
Most younger siblings have an easy time in the admissions process. I can only think of one case of a younger sibling not being admitted. About half of the students who entered with me had come from public schools. The remainder came from private K-6 schools, or had transferred from other New York private schools The Elizabeth Morrow School and St. Bernard were two of the larger feeder schools...
The work can be stressful sometimes. But everybody is going through the same emotions. You will be able to form a true bond with your hall-mates, roommates, resident assistants, and teammates. NY, NJ, CT, MA, NH, VT comprise more than half of the student body. Deerfield has quite a racially diverse student body, although the student body tends to be pretty uniform with respect to socio-economic background. The school is located within the town of Deerfield. The quietest and safest place one could be. You certainly won't get any bars if you have AT&T. But don't worry. Cell phones are not allowed....
